Tucson Downtown Night Run and Walk June 1

AZL Tucson RunOn Saturday, the Southern Arizona Roadrunners host the 7th Annual TMC Meet Me Downtown Run & Walk in the Old Pueblo.  

Designed to highlight historic Downtown Tucson and promote regional health and wellness, the run and walk starts and finishes at the Children’s Museum in the heart of Downtown.  Walkers and runners of all ages can participate in their choice of two events:

  • A 5k (3.1 mile) run and walk for all ages and abilities.  There is over $1200 in prize money for top runners, plus age-group awards in 5-year categories from under-20 to 70-and-over.  The 5k starts at 7:00 pm.
  • The  Free Family Walk and Run for children and families starts at 6:30 pm.

Mayor Jonathan Rothschild will do the One Mile as a way to highlight the need for youth and family fitness in the Tucson region, and Olympic Bronze Medalist and former Boston Marathon Champion Loraine Moller will speak to runners about women’s fitness and running. The President of the acclaimed Arthur Lydiard Foundation, Loraine is a sought-after expert in women’s running, Olympic training, and running coaching.

This is the first event in the 3rd Annual Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown. Named after Tucsonan Gabe Zimmerman, who died in the tragic shootings on January 8, 2011, the Triple Crown honors Zimmerman’s memory as a public servant committed to helping others. More than 500 people have registered for the 2013 Triple Crown, raising over $5,000 for the non-profit Child and Family Resources.

5th, 6th, and 7th Avenues and all cross streets between 22nd Street and 12th Street will be closed for the event between 6-10pm on Saturday night, June 1st.All participants will receive a custom-designed commemorative medal and t-shirt. There will be jumping castles, face painting, children’s activities from City of Tucson Parks and Recrecration, free massages, and more.Entry in the 5k is $30, the One Mile is freeFounded in 1972, the Southern Arizona Roadrunners is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting health and fitness in Tucson and Southern Arizona through running and walking.  SAR is one of the largest non-profit running clubs in the nation.  See www.azroadrunners.org for information.
